How not to get blown up with mailing lists:

Ethnicity/religion: These selects are determined from the spelling of the surname. If your client is advertising for a Spanish speaking newspaper, a language confidence file is much more appropriate because a telemarketing firm has verified some level of the language spoken in the household. Also, there are response files available that cater to certain ethnic groups.

Survey based information for telemarketing: When compiling survey based information, one person usually completes the information for the entire household. This means that we may not be able to identify the exact individual within the household that matches a particular lifestyle characteristic.

Survey based information for campaigns directed to males: The person that fills out the survey is usually female. Unless otherwise specified, this is the name that is output. We can force the name of a male over 18, but we cannon guarantee that the lifestyle selection corresponds to that individual.

Home based businesses: Comparing a business list to the post office’s delivery sequence file of all residential addresses identifies home based businesses. One needs to be aware of the fact that there may be some inaccuracies. Executives with home offices may appear as home based businesses.

Renters: There is no foolproof way to identify renters. We can provide a count of all multi-family dwelling units with and without apartment numbers. There is a chance this will include a small percentage of condos and/or townhouses.

New movers: New movers are identified when credit card and/or magazine subscription changes of address are filed. It is important to keep in mind the date the address change is captured becomes the move date on most list files.

New business incorporations: If a company is in business for 10 years and then incorporates, it will be identified as a new business. It is important to be aware of this when considering your marketing campaign.

Race: In addition to surname, another way race is determined is with the use of census information at the neighborhood level. We have seen gross inaccuracies when trying to identify race through the census information. The selection is based on a percentage of the neighborhood that is reportedly a specific race. For example, if a zip code was 80% African-American in 1990, the entire zip code would be considered in the count.

Contact names: It is not unusual for individuals in middle management to change jobs frequently. The possibility exists that if you mail to a specific contact at a company, they might not be employed there anymore. To overcome this risk, we would suggest title addressing the mail piece whenever possible.

Opportunity seeker: We take great care in the sale of opportunity seekers. Low-end offers tend to have very low responses. If you are looking for high-end opportunity seekers, a managed list of financial seminar attendees may be your best bet.

First class mailing of a resident/occupant list: In an attempt to have mail delivered more quickly, clients might wish to mail resident/occupant lists first class. This is not recommended in rural routes because they tend to be simplified addressing and undeliverable if mailed first class. Additional exposure could exist with PO Boxes.
